Collection: Craggy Range
Established in 1998, Craggy Range is a family winery located in the shadow of the spectacular Te Mata Peak in Hawke's Bay - a premium wine region on the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island. Owner Terry Peabody and his family (originally from the US) wanted to build the winery from the ground up on a greenfield site, thereby ensuring quality control. Their search traditionally began in France, America and took them all the way to Australia. Until chance brought Terry to New Zealand. Here he saw opportunity in the unique climate, the rich history of cultivating the land, and also in the pioneering spirit of the local people.
And so they settled in the Gimblett Gravels wine region, in the original bed of the Ngaruroro River in Hawke's Bay. The Gimblett Gravels vineyard is a warm place with stony and sandy alluvial soils (deposits formed in watercourse floodplains from frequent flooding) and offers an ideal location for the production of high quality red wine varieties such as Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Terry then traveled to Martinborough where he found a piece of farmland located in the Te Muna Road area. Here, Pinot Noir is grown on an elevated vineyard located on old rocky clay soils. On the lower terraced vineyard, from younger gravel soils interspersed with limestone, a unique style of aromatic and mineral Sauvignon Blanc variety is successfully grown.
The winery was recognized as "New World Winery of the Year" in 2014 by the renowned American publication Wine Enthusiast . Many Craggy Range wines have also won major awards around the world.
